Allergies and Chiropractic
An interesting phenomenon persists in our universe which is: how common and aggressive allergies are in the developed world. Allergies may be one of the most influential factors and causes of chronic illness today. What’s more disturbing, is the percentage of the population that is suffering this debilitating malady and how quickly the numbers are rising due to such influences as processed foods, pollution, and climate change. For most, allergies will also raise medical costs, which are thought to be over $13 billion/yr*(1) in North America already.
Usually when you encounter allergies, they have been caused by:
How Allergies Work
There are several factors that can make the immune system kick in to overdrive and, eventually, into an uncomfortable frenzy. Illness caused by virus, bacteria and infection are normal triggers for the immune system to go to work. It’s how we heal, and is necessary to survival. Chronic conditions like Lupus can also cause the immune system to over-react leading to discomfort and worse. Stress can be attributed to many allergic reactions in the form of hives and internal discomfort and more severe health issues. But allergies are really reactions from external sources that cause the immune system to exaggerate the body’s response to what are mostly harmless substances and stimuli. So the body feels an irritant, but for some reason it mistakenly reacts as though it’s being attacked and responds with a much more aggression than is needed.
Immunoglobulin (antibodies) is what is produced when an irritant has been touched, inhaled or eaten causing the release of histamines (hence the drug ANTIHISTAMINE). Immediately the histamines counter- attack the imaginary invaders and begin to ravage the body. Noticeable symptoms include the dropping of blood pressure, blood vessel dilation, and the influx of fluid in areas affected by the allergy attack.
The over-the-top response by the body causes a crateful of uncomfortable, often painful responses from itching to sneezing to nausea and vomiting. If severe enough, reactions throughout the entire body can become dangerous to life itself.
As always, chiropractors offer drug-free approaches to treating allergy reactions and painful or irritating symptoms. Not everybody wants to take drugs to treat cause and effect of allergies. The medical community still does not fully understand the mechanism that drives allergic reactions but are agreed that stress enters the picture. Combined with the physical aspect of allergies, added psychological stress can cause worsened chronic results.
Allergies Stress and the Immune System
So the nervous system and immune system are very closely linked; research indicates that the inflammatory results of both are similar and that stress elevates the immune systems already hyper response to the physical reaction to an allergy attack. The anti-inflammatory Cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands, is reduced as chronic stress begins to wear the glands down. Symptoms worsen at this point.
Help From Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care revolves around the nervous system and spinal system. Stress and immune disorders are often aggravated by the lowered communication between the brain, spinal cord, and the nervous system. By improving that communication, chiropractic care can impressively help coordinate the body’s reaction to allergens and can lead to regulation of the symptoms. By extension, chiropractors can strengthen the immune system through the correction of misalignments in the spine. The neck area is often the most affected and where corrections are made. Without clear lines of communication from brain to affected areas, symptoms of stress and allergies are needlessly amplified. Joint and soft tissue manipulation is a major part of the treatment that can lead to more normal allergic reactions. As mentioned above, adrenal gland health is essential to monitoring and regulating allergic reactions and with the proper adjustments and alignment of the spine; mitigation of the severity of allergy reactions can be expected.
Chiropractors will work with patients to improve respiratory health through elimination of any blocks in information flow to and from the brain. The result is that attacks on the respiratory system will be reduced and improve overall ability to withstand allergy reactions.
We also work with you to look at and recommend dietary and lifestyle changes if needed. It’s no secret that foods play a large role in negative reactions (we can’t do too much yet about bees and peanut butter), allergy symptoms so we will offer our best advice on foods to eliminate and foods to add for overall improvement. Let’s try and work together before you dash off to purchase expensive drugs that may not work and cause other issues.
