Can you go to a chiropractor while pregnant?
Absolutely. This is arguably the most important time to have a spinal check up. The alignment of mom's spine will have a direct impact on the mom's ability to communicate with her baby, and for optimal nerve function for both mom and baby. Research has shown that regular adjustments can help reduce pregnancy discomfort, labour pain, and the duration of labour. (ICPA.org)
Why chiropractic care during pregnancy?
You might not know this, but babies can benefit from moms who have been seen by, and received chiropractic care. Usually, baby's first trauma is birth itself. It only makes sense that the easier the birth, the better start into life the baby has. With a chiropractic approach during pregnancy, by a chiropractor who is trained in the needs of pregnant women, it can allow for a smoother, less stressful pregnancy experience.
Physiological and endocrinological changes develop while the body prepares for creating the best natural environment for the growing baby. These changes can result in protruding abdomen, back curve issues and pelvic changes which can further lead to postural distortions that are not necessarily good for mom and can lead to discomfort. Chiropractic care will usually correct these events and will help establish pelvic balance along with proper alignment. A misaligned pelvis may reduce the amount of room available for baby as it is developing (intrauterine constraint) and can also make it more difficult for baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. In general, keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively. You may also receive information on exercises and stretches that are safe to use during pregnancy.
What are the benefts of chiropractic care during pregnancy?
What about breech deliveries and chiropractic care?
As a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) we are familiar with its founder, the late Larry Webster, D.C., and his development of a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment which enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning and is known as the Webster Technique. Studies suggest it may be beneficial to perform this specific adjustment as early as the 8th month of pregnancy, in the unlikely event a woman has shown indications of a breech presentation. (ICPA.org)
Currently, the ICPA recommends women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. A balanced pelvis gives babies a greater chance of naturally moving into the desirable position for birth, thus reducing the potential crisis and associated worry.
