WELLNESS

Chiropractic.  It’s about restoring function and total health to your nervous system which coordinates every bodily function. There are many forms of lower back pain including sciatica.  However, sciatica pain is usually much more severe in the legs and leading down as far as the toes. People of all ages and walks of life, from differing professions and backgrounds experience amazing improvements with their health and wellness through the use of consistent chiropractic care.

Sciatica Nerve Pain

People who are suffering from Sciatica, or lumbar radiculopathy, can have severe, debilitating pain from their lower back region and into the leg.  It almost always strikes on one side and seems to be worse while standing or sitting. Steady walking and lying down seem to relieve pain somewhat.  Sciatica pain sufferers usually describe their pain as a searing or burning feeling down their leg, sometimes also described as pins and needles or weakness when moving the leg when climbing stairs and maybe getting in and out of a car.  Sciatica nerve pain is more common than it should be and can take a relatively long time to heal.

Leading Causes of Sciatica Leg Pain

Sciatica is not so much a disease as it is a symptom.  Like so many symptoms in the human body, the causes can be found in the nervous system. The sciatica nerve is made up 2 nerve roots (fibers) that exit the lumbar spine area and 3 roots that exit the spine in the sacral area (tailbone). These bundles come together and form the sciatica nerve which is the biggest nerve in your body. From the base of the spine the sciatica branches into each leg and down the back of the thigh and calf into the foot.  Some causes of sciatica are:
  • Herniated disc: also known as slipped disc and bulging disc which in turn can put pressure on the sciatica nerve.
  • Disc degeneration: can cause bone spurs and/or weakened disc that will ultimately cause micro-motion releasing inflammatory proteins.
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis which is a narrowing of the open spaces within your spine, allowing pressure to be exerted on your spinal cord and the nerves that travel through the spine to your legs.
  • Piriformus: buttock spasms and associated pain, which in turn can irritate the sciatica. It is not a true form of sciatica but the symptoms are very similar.

Sciatica Nerve Pain Relief

Diagnosis of sciatica should be taken very seriously as it can lead to long-term chronic pain. Chiropractic health care has been shown to provide effective sciatica nerve pain relief for many patients. Manual manipulation by appropriately trained health professionals can create a better healing environment and are most likely not painful. Spinal adjustments and manipulation, when performed by trained chiropractic professionals are centered on improving spinal column alignment, which is how we address many underlying conditions of the nervous system that can cause sciatic nerve pain.
