As we enter the wonderful season of fall, we are often inspired to make positive changes in our lives. We strive to become more focused, more organized, to take on new habits, and to commit to new routines. At Scott Family Chiropractic we are excited to embrace the adventure of fall, and over the next couple months we will be focused on teaching some secrets of health and how to maximize our health potential.
Obviously for us to be healthy we need to have a healthy body and a healthy mind. We are excited to present some answers to the most commonly asked question from patients: “What can I do to experience better health?”
I don’t need to tell you this is not a simple answer. This is a question we have all wondered at some point in our journey. As a starting point, we know that our bodies need healthy fuel. When it comes to nutrition, our culture is well fed, but nutritionally starving.
Chiropractic Health and Nutrition
Far too often we are focused on satisfying our hunger and cravings, and neglecting the things our body really needs the most. There are many essential phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals that nature provides, but typical North American diets don’t contain them from over refining and extending shelf life, which results in our bodies becoming nutrient deficient.
Another key essential our bodies need is regular movement. Our lives have become very sedentary, which science says can be more deadly than smoking! We sit while driving to work/school, we sit while at work/school, we sit travelling back home, and then we spend more time sitting at home!
There are enormous benefits that our bodies gain from movement, but some people are scared or intimidated by the thought of joining a gym. Impersonal, busy, overwhelming equipment, fear of failure and so on might be some of the reasons for staying away.
Sometimes the best thing to do if exercise is a struggle for you, is to begin with simple baby steps, such as: going for a walk each evening/lunch or changing your work environment so that you are not sitting all day long. Then work towards reserving small parts of your day for an exercise style that you enjoy.
Posture and Spinal Health
Obviously, we also want to ensure we are doing things that optimize our posture and enhance our nervous system communication. It can be as simple as avoiding looking down at our phone or computer as often, avoiding sitting on the wallet or phone in our pocket, or even avoiding heavy bags/purses on one shoulder.
One of the biggest dilemmas we are seeing in our culture today is that we are not living a lifestyle that is congruent with health. As a result of that lifestyle, our bodies experience symptoms.
Symptoms are simply a way for our body to tell us that something is wrong. We need to listen to our bodies more, so that we can make the appropriate changes in our lifestyle to allow our body to heal and repair properly, and thereby eliminate the cause of the symptoms.
Prevention versus Symptom Treatment for Diseases
We are living in an age where we are seeing record number of medical addictions, side effects, and body breakdown. It goes far beyond the “opioid crisis” we are hearing about in the media.
The Opioid crisis is really just a reflection of our society having become dependent on quick fixes and symptom treatment. Drugs can be necessary at times to save our lives, but we need to look to them as a last resort, not the first option. We also need to be aware of potential side effects, and how they hinder our body’s ability to heal.
